A comprehensive travel insurance policy can offer protection when travelling to India for the Holi Festival

February 14th, 2012

The images of travellers drenched in colour and powder flying through the air is instantly recognisable, yet few take the opportunity to travel to India's Holi Festival.

The 16-day religious event is celebrated by Hindus and Sikh in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka and marks the departure of winter as well as celebrating the triumph of good over evil, bridging social gaps and encouraging new beginnings.

Also known as the Festival of Colours, the event dates back to the 7th century. The most famous Holi is now played in Vrindavan-Mathura regions of the state of Uttar Pradesh in Northern India.

While the dates vary every year due to the fact that the Hindu calendar is based on solar cycles, the event will be held on March 8 2012.

The primary celebration begins with a bonfire being lit on the eve of the festival and stories of Hindu legends are shared.

One of the most common tales shared is that of the god Vishnu saving Prahalad - the son of the demon king - from burning in a fire.

The joyous occasion also sees many traditional Indian customs relaxed, with men and women - as well as those of differing castes - happily showering each other in colour.

The suspension of common distinctions of class, age and gender creates a welcoming atmosphere for international visitors, with many encouraged to participate in exuberant style by singing, dancing and throwing the paint.

One popular tourist option during the festival is the Holi Cow Festival, held a short distance outside of Dehli. Both DJs and bands perform while the colourful and fun nature of Holi is translated into a music festival.

Attending a large event such as Holi in a unique international destination may seem overwhelming and among all of the colour there still lies potential dangers such as theft or injury.

A comprehensive travel insurance policy will not only provide protection but also offer travellers peace of mind, leaving them to enjoy the unique festival and become accustom to the catch-cry "bura na maano Holi hai!".
